Awaken, Oh Remnant! Understanding Scripture

Awaken clouds

Have you ever noticed a lack of spiritual connection in your prayer life? A plateau of sorts with your relationship with the Lord? Even just a feeling that there has to be more to this Christian walk, more to relationship with Christ? That you could be going deeper, praying more fervently, knowing Jesus better, and understanding the Word of God in a clearer way? I think that God wants us to experience His Word the way He intended it. Not through our understanding or the way we have been taught all our lives by fallible teachers. The way He spoke it to the inspired writers of the Word. The way the ancient people understood it.

It seems to me that most of the Christian church is asleep. The people are comfortable with their routines of church on Sundays, bible studies during the week (maybe, if you’re really spiritual) and fun camps and outings, potlucks and programs. Most people who claim the name of Jesus, and check Christian on their medical release paperwork, rarely open their bibles between Sundays. Sad. Yet, true. They are missing so much!

It occurs to me that the lost people of the world, those who practice pagan ways, witchcraft, sorcery, new ageism, and other such walks, are more spiritually awake than most Christians. They are aware of the spiritual world more fully and believe the spiritual things of this world for what they are. They don’t doubt the existence of evil, the powers of light and darkness, and the reality of the spiritual realm.

James 2:19 “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!”

I think they consider the church pathetic, asleep, deceived and totally won over by the enemy. You see, if the Christian church doesn’t really believe evil is real, or that Satan is out to have us, to steal, kill and destroy us and our families, the enemy doesn’t have as much work to do. He has already lulled us into a stupor. Too wrapped up in our routines and good works, to really care about a deep relationship with Christ or real knowledge of the truth.

Jesus said in John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

I am blessed to know a great group of followers of Christ that really love Jesus. Men and women who desire the truth, pray zealously and seek to know the scriptures completely. Yet we all miss the mark in some aspects on this beautiful journey with Christ. We are not the ancient people of Isreal or even their pagan neighbors. Therefore, we do not have the life experiences that they had. Furthermore, we do not understand the spiritual world the way they did.

For several months I have consistently and fervently prayed for spiritual awakening for myself, my family, my small church body and the collective body of Christ. I have chased after the truth. Passionately, I have been seeking a true understanding of the scriptures. I continued asking to see the spiritual realm with true spiritual eyes. God has been faithful to grant my petitions for clarity and has begun opening my eyes, heart, and ears to His Word in new ways. I’m going to tell you, things have gotten really intense and at certain times taken my breath away and even shocked me in some aspects.

Want to see scripture in a brand new way? Want to experience God the way He intended you to? Stop viewing the Word through your own filter, or the way you’ve been taught, through the lens of your culture, your experience, your desires, and the world. Read it for what it actually says, through the view of the ancient people it was written by and for at the time of it’s writing. That is not to say that it is not written for you, in your time now. But rather understand it as it was written without the layers of traditions and modern culture.

Here are a few nuggets to explore. What does God say about the mighty men, giants, the divine assembly, spiritual forces, entities, divisions, our purpose, His will, Christ’s conquering of dominions? Dig into word study, look at the mountains, high places, and worship and idolatry. What did all of these things mean to the ancient peoples? See for yourself. Look at difficult passages and weird stuff. If every word of scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit, then every word is important, not filler taking up space for no reason. Skipping over tough stuff means missing the very important stuff! If it stands out as weird, it is probably really important!

In conclusion, someone else’s study and interpretation can be helpful. But more essential is God’s revelation to you! Are you seeking a true understanding of the scriptures? Or are you seeking to understand scripture in a way that fits what you are comfortable with?

Psalms 119:18 “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”

The word law here refers to the Torah, however, it also means teaching or instruction. I implore you to earnestly pray for a revelation of the scriptures. Once the Lord opens your eyes to truly see, you will never read your Bible the same again.
